Those of us who experienced computer glitches, unusual travel delays, and misunderstandings on September 24, 2008, rode the heaviest intensity of the onset of Mercury Retrograde in September. This Libra Mercury Retrograde period started 0:17 am PDT September 24 and will end 1:06 pm PDT October 15. What this means is that this is a period conducive to having a number of unanticipated delays, miscommunication, technical difficulties, and self-reflections. It is a period best spent on repairing, revising, redoing, readjusting, anything that causes people to take stock and revisit outstanding issues, relationships, and unfinished business. Depending on which House Libra sits in your Astrological Chart, you may be called upon to look back and determine what needs adjustment in an area of your life.
As an Aries-Taurus Cusp with Gemini Rising, my energy in the first part of September, when the shadow of the retrograde began its way towards us, focused on Commitments, Work and Love. Any unfinished business I had in these areas of my life came up out of nowhere for me to deal with right away. There were no warnings! Since we are still in Mercury Retrograde period for the next 3-4 weeks, I am aware that any communication issues that will come my way will bring me gifts of discovery if I look into it objectively or they will give me opportunities to learn more about myself in regards to patience, empathy, order and boundaries.
What I find interesting now is the ongoing political debate during Mercury Retrograde. Any new promises or positions taken during this period could potentially have a 180-degree turn as our analytical thinking and reasoning skills do get affected when Mercury is not in its strongest position. It would not be surprising that as a result, people’s emotions will get the best of them and may cause them to do or say things they will later regret. This is the hallmark of Mercury Retrograde if we do not pay attention to the energy around us.
Mercury Retrograde period is a wonderful time to reconsider what the political candidates are saying about their position and the promises they are making without our usual emotions getting in the way of reason. This is a time to revisit our economic state, the present Administration’s achievements and consequences of their actions the past 4 to 8 years. This is the time to rethink the proposed plans of our government and military leaders regarding our global standing and affairs in foreign lands as well as our own domestic dilemmas. This is the time to keep our emotions in check and allow for our critical thinking skills to be more active in our decision making.
Mercury Retrograde came in a very good time, just before the US Presidential Elections. The energy of this period does not support new beginnings, new contracts, new collaboration efforts, new programs, new promises. The energy is best used for reflection, revisions, re-organization, reconsideration, rethinking. Actually, it is best for just about anything that has to do with taking care of unfinished business and re-visiting the past to make corrections and necessary adjustments. It calls on us to detach from the drama and disengage from the rhetoric. Instead, it propels us to consider what we truly desire in our lives, keeping in mind the future of our children and our natural resources, and how can our desires be best supported by our country’s leadership the next 4 years and beyond. Based on our vision of the future we desire for ourselves and the world at large, this is where we decide critically which political candidates will best serve the manifestation of our vision.

I have not been to a Laughter Yoga Club before, and when I had the chance to tune in to a Virtual Laughter Yoga Club hosted by the Laughing Lady on BlogTalkRadio, I just had to check it out and experience it for myself.
It only took a few minutes to figure out the whole agenda was to get everyone laughing on the phone for call-ins, in the live chat room, or right at your computer and/or phone listening to the online talk radio show. I made friends instantly as I am getting to be known as HolisticLifeDesigns, aka holistic, HLD and Gina Alzate.
After I took off my analytic cap, I just went with the flow and began laughing with everyone else, for no apparent reason but just to laugh. Did you know that laughing out loud and listening to others laugh is contagious? What makes this different from tuning in to a comedy show or watching a sitcom is that one does not need to have a story, a show, or a one-liner to get everyone assessing whether it warranted a laugh.
Last night all we did was laugh. We made those sounds we thought were funny and we started laughing. Actually everyone started joining in the fun of laughter just by listening to the many funny ways people laugh.
Laughter was truly what the Universe sent me as my holistic medicine to make light of things. I wanted an energy shift and I got it. One hour of creating endorphines in my body gave me a very restful sleep and a joyful morning. What a deal!
So, on Mondays at 10 PM Eastern time, I invite you to join Laughing Lady and her friends at the Virtual Laughter Yoga Club and receive a wonderful dose of Holistic Medicine, Laughter. You’ll be giving yourself a truly joyful gift!

Spirituality and Religion: How much do we really know about them? September 21, 2008

Have you ever found yourself in a seemingly harmless discussion with a fellow stranger about the weather only to turn the flow of conversation into religion and spirituality? I encountered this incidence tonight with a woman calling herself Christian and claiming that the Bible is the Final Authority on God. As I heard her speak my immediate reaction was to move away from the conversation, from the woman herself, as I sensed a trap for debate and scrutiny of someone’s beliefs was being laid out before me. In the context of her speech, I gathered she had checked out my website at www.holisticlifedesigns.com and judged me not Christian due to my connection to angels and spirit guides. She was a fellow BlogTalkRadio Host.
I told her I’m Catholic, thus a Christian and we work with angels and saints, and she bantered back as she did not think Catholics as being Christians. Already, I knew inside me this was not going to go anywhere and it would be pointless to continue, so I decided to retreat…No, I wanted to run away from her as fast as I could. I sensed she was looking for an audience to spill her so-called spirituality and righteousness on to others, especially those she judged as unbelievers like me.
I made it a point to stop her tracks and told her we did not have anything in common we could talk about and it was best that we leave it at that. Not done with trying to convert me into her line of thinking, she proceeded to give me a mini-lecture on her belief structure regarding the Bible. I stopped her on her tracks one more time, reiterating my position as we did not have any common ground to discuss her fundamental beliefs as she obviously had no regard with mine. This time, I kept moving leaving her behind befuddled as to why I did not want to accept Jesus Christ as my Savior. I’m not sure what made her come up with that conclusion as all she had done was assume, but I did not care to ask.
As I reflected upon this event, I wondered what was the meaning of that interaction? Then, I remembered an Inner knowing I received earlier before I met her which was not to back down. At first, I didn’t know what that notion meant until I faced the drama. As soon as I realized what was happening, I detached from the drama she created and I kept moving. I figured as long as she had an audience, she would have engaged in ego-centered power play that she had all the answers regarding God. She insisted that God is separate from us, and my belief system centered around God as living in us. But without an audience, she can only argue with herself and her own self-righteousness.
Then I wondered what makes people like her execute the need to display a false sense of superiority on others? The antidote for such unwanted attempts to dominate was to ignore and detach from the drama, and not take any of it personally. I found early on that by taking attacks personally, I allowed others the power to judge me thus making myself take the role of the victim. This submission would definitely not honor my God who lives in me.

Relationships are our greatest teachers in getting to know ourselves. When we meet people whose traits we admire, we may be on the verge of developing those traits within us. When we are envious of other people’s accomplishments and lifestyles, we may be remembering a life we are also meant to have. When we meet people we immediately like or dislike, perhaps there might be some past life remnants which their looks and behaviors remind us of another time in our history. When we eagerly partner up with another person only to bear so many challenges with them later on, we may be living past life issues needing resolution. Whatever the reason we engage in relationships willingly, relationships teach us so much about ourselves.
In relationships, we learn to set up boundaries and enforce them. We know the levels of our threshold for pain. We discover strengths we did not know we have within us. We find out how far our own human potential could take us. We rediscover our natural abilities, our talents and innate genius. We learn to discern, judge critically, and take notes about the diverse ways the Universe teaches us about life. We learn to feel all ranges of emotions. Along with our range of emotions, we learn which experiences cause us pain and which ones give us pleasure. The greatest of these emotions to master in our lifetime is love.
Love has many faces, many meanings, many paths. Love takes us to the highest potential we could ever imagine for ourselves. Love brings us life and joyfulness. Love moves us to passion and romance. Love compels us to sacrifice and care. Love is what we give it meaning. Love calls for forgiveness and releasement for us to move on with our lives.
What we hold bound on Earth, becomes bound. What we do not forgive in ourselves and others, we bind to our next experience. The Universe seeks to balance our learning points. When we cause pain as we learn our life’s lessons, we become the recipient of that pain at the next chance we get. This is how we learn. When that pain becomes so deep that it is difficult to forgive, we carry it over to our next experience. When we do not resolve it before our life ends, we carry that pain over to resolve in our next experience, either in the Afterlife or in the next life.
So, the Universe time and time again allows us to resolve pain we carry throughout our life by re-introducing the circumstances back to us. The people and circumstances that cause the same pain may be different, but the underlying need to resolve it is the same. Forgiveness is heart-wrenchingly difficult as it requires releasing of resentment, guilt, fears, pains, hurts, and all other feelings of rejection and abandonment. So much energy is used to contain these negative patterns and we feel limited to move past it. Talking about forgiveness without the actual act of letting go of resentment does nothing but unearths the issue and magnifies the pain. The true healer for pain is truly the actual letting go of past hurts from our hearts, minds and souls. As part of taking the holistic approach to healing, our bodies then become freed from the remnants of painful experiences as our negative emotions no longer need a space to store resentments. Without us carting our pain around, we become healthier as we grow spiritually throughout our lives.
Every relationship has a history and lessons learned. Keep these and let go of pain. In relationships where love dominated, keep the love and the lessons, then let go of past hurts. Do this to keep your heart at its optimal health. Be present in the here and now. Let go of pain belonging to the past. Keep the love and the lesson then move forward. Claim the energy freed from forgiveness and redirect it to more positive aspects of daily living. Then, be ready for more meaningful experiences to enter your life, and the cycle of learning and growing continues. At least, old negative patterns fall away making room for the creation of new memories.

If Knowledge Is Power, How Powerful Are You? September 4, 2008

If knowledge is power, how powerful are you? How well do you know yourself, your passion and dreams, your fears and doubts, your wants and needs, your strengths and shortcomings, your history and ancestry? What talents and abilities do you have now that you have cultivated or still need to tap? Do they bring you love, joy and peace? How dependent are you on others’ support and advice? Do you rely on yourself to attend to your own personal and professional issues?
On the other hand, are you included in community or family gatherings, in ceremonies and other people’s significant emotional events? How are your talents and abilities called to action by others? Do you use them in meaningful ways to you and your circle of influence? Do they contribute to help someone achieve productivity and influence? How often do people tap on to you to bring them love, joy and peace? Are you called upon for support and advice? Do people rely on you to help them with personal and professional issues?
In essence, how influential and connected are you to yourself and others? How wide is your circle of influence? How deep does this circle of influence take your knowledge? Would you agree that knowledge is only powerful if it influences anyone to action? So, if knowledge is power, how powerful are you?
